Ministers MacKay and Fantino Visit With Canadian Sailors in the Gulf of Oman
(firmenpresse) - OMAN, MIDDLE EAST -- (Marketwire) -- 07/02/12 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, and Major-General Jonathan Vance, Director of Staff, Strategic Joint Staff, visited with the officers and crew of Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Charlottetown in the Gulf of Oman today, as part of a Team Canada visit.
"It is a great pleasure to meet and speak with the men and women of the Canadian Forces while they serve our nation on deployed operations around the world," said Minister MacKay. "The officers and crew of the Charlottetown should be proud of the great work that they continue to do in Canada's name, in support of global peace and stability."

"Your continued efforts in support of Canadian values, at home and abroad, enable us to live our lives with the knowledge that we are safer and more secure."
"The officers and crew of HMCS Charlottetown have sailed half-way around the world, demonstrating great flexibility, tenacity and resolve, and contributing to maritime peace and security," said Major-General Vance. "I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to spend time with this group, and to thank them for the great work that they are doing on behalf of Canada."
During their visit, Ministers MacKay and Fantino met with HMCS Charlottetown's leadership and personnel, attended a promotion ceremony on the ship's deck and participated in a town hall meeting. The visit concluded with entertainment for the crew by Glass Tiger, comedian Kelly Taylor, singer-songwriter Liz Coyles. The crew also had an opportunity to meet former hockey players Tiger Williams and Mark Napier.
HMCS Charlottetown has been deployed since January 8, 2012. Between January 24 and April 20, she operated with NATO allies participating in Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR in the Mediterranean Sea. In April, Charlottetown deployed to the Arabian Sea region, joining Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) to conduct maritime security operations. CTF 150, a multinational coalition fleet, was established in October 2001, in the early days of Operation Enduring Freedom. It conducts maritime security and counter-terrorism operations in the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and in the Indian Ocean.
