ID: 1129245

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/29/12 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced funding of up to $16,043 in support of A Salute for Veterans-a day-long event at the National Arts Centre on Canada Day.

"Our Government encourages all Canadians to salute our Veterans and their families and to keep the memory of their achievements and sacrifices alive on Canada Day and every day," said Minister Blaney. "We are proud to support events that honour our Veterans and our service men and women."

The free family-friendly event will include a children's craft corner, Canadian Forces Snowbird pilots signing autographs, performers and various concerts including nostalgic songs from 1930 to 1950 performed by Gertrude Letourneau, the Central Band of the Canadian Forces, the Unisong Choir and Natalie McMaster. Vintage Wings of Canada is partnering in the event and will display historic artifacts from military conflicts.

Veterans Affairs Canada is also contributing to A Salute for Veterans with a special display of the Seventh Book of Remembrance. This book, which is normally on permanent display in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa, contains the names of Canadian Forces members who have lost their lives since October 1, 1947, with the exception of those who are commemorated in the Korean War Book of Remembrance. The Seventh Book of Remembrance will be in the Salon at the National Arts Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Canada Day.

This funding is being provided to the National Art Centre Foundation through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund. Applications to this Fund are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events may be eligible for funding.
