Minister MacKay Announces Infrastructure Improvements at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/28/12 -- Today, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, was joined by Mrs. Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa to announce a total investment of $49 million toward several infrastructure projects at the base.
"Our Government has an ongoing commitment toward our men and women in uniform to provide them the tools and facilities they need to work and train for their service to Canada," said Minister MacKay. "Our forces do excellent and often dangerous work on our behalf, and they deserve nothing less than top-of-the-line infrastructure in order to do those jobs safely and effectively."

"In addition to supporting our Forces, the projects announced today will generate important benefits for the local economy here in Petawawa, and beyond for communities across Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec."
While on base, Minister MacKay took the opportunity to officially cut the ribbon for the new building housing the Joint Personnel Support Unit Eastern Ontario Regional Element, a project valued at $2.6 million. The facility will provide key coordination for important services delivered throughout the region in support of ill and injured CF personnel and their families.
In addition, Minister MacKay also announced the opening of the Equipment Fielding Coordination Centre (EFCC), a project valued at $3.5 million, as well as commitments totaling $38.8 million towards two training accommodations facilities, one of which will support the base's Medium-to-Heavy-Lift Helicopter program.
Finally, the minister announced over $4 million for a total of 19 contracts to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec companies for various improvements to base infrastructure.
In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Government of Canada conducted an open, fair, and transparent competitive process to award each of these contracts.

BACKGROUNDER
Infrastructure Investment at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Petawawa
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, together with Mrs. Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, announced the following commitments to infrastructure at CFB Petawawa:
Joint Personnel Support Unit Eastern Ontario Regional Element building
The Joint Personnel Support Unit (JPSU) Eastern Ontario Regional Element building in Petawawa is 443.46 m2, and will house the nine JPSU Eastern Ontario Region Element staff. As the regional element for all the Integrated Personnel Support Centres for Eastern Ontario Region, this new building will be a central location to help coordinate and deliver necessary support for ill and injured Canadian Forces personnel, former personnel, their families and the families of the deceased in Petawawa, Ottawa, Trenton, Kingston, and Petawawa-Satellite North Bay. The overall cost of this project is approximately $2.6 million.
Equipment Fielding Coordination Centre
The Equipment Fielding Coordination Centre (EFCC) is a 1222 m2 building with an additional 3798 m2 of parking space. The EFCC provides 2 Area Support Unit Petawawa with much needed infrastructure that includes office, maintenance, storage, training, and parking space. The overall cost of this project is approximately $3.5 million.
Training Accommodations
The first of the training accommodation facilities will provide 97 rooms of additional accommodations for CFB Petawawa to alleviate accommodation shortages at the base. This project will cost approximately $16.4 million with completion in September 2012.
The second training accommodations facility will provide 99 additional accommodation rooms to support personnel who will be training at CFB Petawawa as part of the Medium-to-Heavy Lift Helicopter program. This project will cost approximately $22.4 million with completion in fall 2013.
Various contract awards to improve base infrastructure
As part of the Government of Canada's commitment to infrastructure at CFB Petawawa, the following contracts, awarded in open, fair and transparent processes, were announced.
Together, these 19 contracts represent an investment totaling over $4 million in the economy of Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.
