Thomas G. Conway Commences Term as Treasurer of the Law Society
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/28/12 -- Following his acclamation, Thomas G. Conway began his term as Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada today. The Treasurer is the top-elected official of the Law Society, which regulates Ontario's lawyers and paralegals in the public interest. Treasurer Conway succeeds former Treasurer Laurie H. Pawlitza.
"I am greatly honoured by the confidence of my fellow benchers," says Conway. "The legal profession, and the public we serve, are facing issues of great significance, particularly around access to justice. As Treasurer, I hope to continue to strengthen the leading role of the Law Society in regulating legal services and enhancing justice for the people of Ontario."
The Treasurer presides over Convocation, the Law Society's , and is elected by the members of the board, known as benchers.
Treasurer Conway was first elected as a bencher of the Law Society in 2007, and was re-elected in 2011. He has served on a number of committees and was co-chair of the Retention of Women in Private Practice Working Group, which developed ground-breaking initiatives to support women in the legal profession. Most recently, he served as chair of the Professional Development and Competence Committee, chair of the Inter-Jurisdictional Mobility Committee and chair of the Articling Task Force. He is also a vice president of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, for 2011 and 2012.
Treasurer Conway has practised civil litigation in Ottawa since his call to the Bar in 1989 and is currently a partner at Cavanagh LLP. He has extensive civil trial and appellate experience, acting as counsel in jury and non-jury trials in the Superior Court of Ontario, in the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, the Tax Court of Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada. In 2009, Treasurer Conway was selected by his peers to be included in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada® in the specialty of Corporate and Commercial Litigation.
