Appointment to the National Seniors Council
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/27/12 -- The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, and the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors), today announced the appointment of a new member to the National Seniors Council (NSC).
"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. C. Shanthi Johnson to the National Seniors Council," said Minister Finley. "Dr. Johnson's academic career and vast research experience in the field of seniors' health and nutrition will be a genuine asset to the Council."
Dr. Johnson is the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. She holds a Ph.D. in Kinesiology, a Master of Science in Nutrition and a Master's Certificate in Business Fundamentals. She has also held professor and assistant professor posts at Acadia University and the University of Western Ontario, and has lectured at Avinashilingam University in India. Her volunteer experience includes teaching underprivileged adults and children basic language and math literacy skills, and acting as a cultural interpreter for immigrant families in health crises.
"The issues affecting seniors are becoming increasingly important as our demographics change and people over 65 continue to make up a larger proportion of our population," said Minister of State Wong. "Dr. Johnson's experience and knowledge of health issues impacting seniors will bring a unique and important perspective to the National Seniors Council."
The NSC is mandated to provide advice to the federal government on matters related to the well-being and quality of life of Canada's seniors, including new opportunities and issues arising from a rapidly growing and increasingly diverse seniors population.
Members appointed to the NSC bring their knowledge and experience in helping the federal government understand the issues facing seniors today.
