(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/24/12 -- On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Eve Adams, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Brampton South, was joined today by Song Oh, Acting Ambassador for the Republic of Korea, to mark the 59th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and honour Veterans of the Korean War.

The day of remembrance included a brief ceremony at the Monument to Canadian Fallen in Confederation Park and was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial.

"Canada's efforts in the Korean War far exceeded what the world could have expected of our nation," said Minister Blaney. "Our Canadian Veterans travelled halfway around the world to serve in a land so different from their own and, in doing so, they distinguished themselves as true heroes. Our Government is proud to honour our nation's heroes who gave so much in the defence of peace, freedom, and democracy."

"We will never forget the courage and sacrifices of so many remarkable Canadians who bravely risked everything to answer our nation's call," said Ms. Adams. "They endured bloody battles and tremendous suffering to persevere against the powers of tyranny and injustice. Our Government will continue to ensure that the legacy of our Veterans lives on for future generations."

From 1950 to 1953, more than 26,000 Canadians served in Korea as part of the United Nations' multinational force. A total of 516 Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace, freedom and justice for the people of South Korea.

At a reception following the ceremonies, Mr. Yang-Sung Jeong, Deputy Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea, presented "Ambassador of Peace" medals to 20 local Veterans of the Korean War.
