Grade 8 students once again receive free passes to Canada's beloved places

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/22/12 -- In collaboration with Nature Canada and The Historica-Dominion Institute, Parks Canada is continuing the My Parks Pass initiative, which grants Grade 8 / Secondary 2 students across Canada free access for one full year to any of Parks Canada's national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas. In addition, Grade 8 / Secondary 2 organized school trip will continue to enter free of charge at all these parks and sites.

"The My Parks Pass program has reached over 400,000 young Canadians each year and I have had the chance to personally see the sparkle in their eyes as they get, in many cases, a first glimpse of Canada's most treasured natural and historic places," said the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. "Canada's future lies in the hands of its young people, and I'm proud to be giving them an opportunity to experience and develop a meaningful connection to the very essence of Canada."

In the last year the My Parks Pass initiative has also created an online community, which has received over 280,000 visits. With a variety of contests and interactive materials on the web, Grade 8/Secondary 2 students have had the opportunity to share their experiences and preview some of the places their My Parks Pass can take them into.

As part of the My Parks Pass initiative, Parks Canada held again Canada's Ultimate Family Adventure Contest, in collaboration with VIA Rail Canada. The Grand Prize Winner and their family will get the chance to experience the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.

From July 10 to July 14, the winning family of four will travel from Montreal to the Niagara Peninsula to experience the historical attractions and walk in the footsteps of some of the heroes and heroines who helped make Canada what it is today. Secondary prizes include VIA Rail vouchers and Parks Canada Family Discovery passes.

Parks Canada manages a network of 43 national parks, 167 national historic sites, and four national marine conservation areas, while setting the stage and inviting Canadians and people from around the world to engage in personal moments of inspiring discovery of our treasured natural and historic places.
