Government of Canada Supports First Nations Arts and Culture in Yukon
(firmenpresse) - WHITEHORSE, YUKON -- (Marketwire) -- 06/19/12 -- Today the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister of Health, on behalf of the Government of Canada, announced support for the Adaka Cultural Festival, taking place this year from June 22 to 28 in Whitehorse.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support the Adaka Cultural Festival, which will increase the awareness and demand for Yukon First Nations arts, crafts and cultural experiences," said Minister Aglukkaq. "Along with the significant economic benefits this event brings to Yukon through tourism and local business activity, the festival provides great opportunities for First Nations artists to increase their profile and to showcase their talents."
"The Adaka Cultural Festival shines a spotlight on Yukon," said Yukon Member of Parliament Ryan Leef. "Hosted at the newly opened Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre, the Adaka Festival provides an opportunity for Yukon First Nations to present their artistry to visitors from around the world at a venue that symbolizes the importance and relevance of Yukon First Nations rich culture and history to this territory."
Funding from the Government of Canada will support the Yukon First Nations Tourism Association (YFNTA) to plan and organize the annual multidisciplinary cultural festival that will bring First Nations artists from across Yukon together with artists from around the world to share and celebrate their creativity and culture with a local, national and international audience.
"The Adaka Cultural Festival provides an opportunity for Yukoners and visitors to celebrate and experience the richness of Yukon First Nations' culture through a variety of traditional and contemporary activities," said Tourism and Culture Minister Mike Nixon. "Yukon government is proud to support festivals such as Adaka which strengthen community spirit and cultural pride."

The CanNor investment for this project is funded by the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building in all three territories.
The Canada Council for the Arts is providing funding through the Aboriginal People's Collaborative Exchange program.
