Media Advisory: Governor General to Take Part in Events Celebrating Aboriginal Day
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/18/12 -- Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will participate in cultural activities in celebration of National Aboriginal Day with Aboriginal groups and students in the Ottawa area, on Wednesday, June 20, 2012.
"Sharon and I are eager to join Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples of all ages during various events in Ottawa to learn more and celebrate the contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples," said His Excellency. "I strongly believe that diversity is one of Canada's greatest strengths. These events will be a great opportunity to remind us that the story of Canada-one of diverse peoples, striving to live together-began with the Aboriginal experience."

Aboriginal Day Celebration
The Governor General will take part in events as part of the Aboriginal Day Celebration organized by Odawa Native Friendship Centre in partnership with Dovercourt Recreation Centre and Aboriginal Experiences. He will attend the opening ceremony before visiting cultural booths throughout the site, participate in games and demonstrations and sample Aboriginal cuisine alongside local school children.
The Odawa Native Friendship Centre is a non-profit organization serving the Aboriginal community in the Ottawa-Carleton Region of Eastern Ontario and surrounding communities. For more information, visit .

Ottawa Inuit Children's Centre
Her Excellency Sharon Johnston will visit the Ottawa Inuit Children's Centre (OICC), which offers programs to Inuit children and youth from birth to 13 years of age and their families. She will join preschool children in a kindergarten classroom and will meet with children participating in the Head Start program.
In partnership with parents and the community, the OICC fosters strong Inuit children, youth and families by providing a learning environment that will enhance children's overall well-being, adaptability and strength in a proud Inuit cultural environment. For more information, visit .

APTN Celebrating Our Peoples Tour Concert
Their Excellencies will host a concert organized in partnership with APTN in celebration of National Aboriginal Day. Aboriginal artists including Sebastien Bull, Derek Miller, Donny Parenteau, Kathia Rock, and Siqiniup Qilauta will showcase their culture and share their stories with Canadians. Highlights of the concert will be broadcast at a later date.
Celebrating Our Peoples is a cross-country tour to celebrate Aboriginal heritage and culture and to share APTN's mission and mandate with Canadians.
