Domestic Abuse Expected to Spike Over Summer Months

If trends over the last two years hold true, the number of domestic-related incidents in Calgary will spike again this summer cautions Connect Family and Sexual Assault Network (), a collaborative of 15 Calgary agencies that coordinates access to support. Based on statistics provided by Calgary Police Service (), a partner of Connect, the average number of incidents in July and August last year was more than fifteen per cent higher than the average for the rest of the year. There was a twenty-five per cent difference between the month with the highest number of incidents (August) and the lowest (December). Stressors related to travel, childcare, increased alcohol consumption, and hotter weather likely play a role.
Although it's a time to relax, summer is also a time of stress for many families. Connect is raising awareness about these statistics to encourage Calgarians to recognize the potential triggers and find early support. As temperatures rise, so can tempers. "We want people to know there's an easy and confidential way to get help before situations escalate," says Deb Tomlinson, Project Manager for Connect.
To illustrate how the pressures of summer can lead to abuse, Connect has created a Facebook timeline for a fictionalized character named Lisa Murray () who tells her story (based on real events) of domestic abuse and recovery over the last few years. Lisa's story is also outlined in a blog post located on Connect's new website Goodgonebad () - a site dedicated to showing how relationships can go from happy to hurtful, which encourages people in all kinds of unhealthy relationships to get help.
This information comes on the heels of the most recent Statistics Canada report () that ranks Alberta-wide rates of police-reported family violence among the highest in the country.
Connect is a collaborative of 15 local agencies who are making it easier to get help. A single phone call (403.237.5888) connects Calgarians to a network of partners and services related to family and sexual abuse.
