Media Advisory: Presentation of the Michener Awards
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/08/12 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will present the Michener Awards for meritorious public service in journalism, as well as the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism, and the first Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education, on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at 6 p.m., during a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
The six finalists for the 2011 Michener Awards are:
This year's Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism will be awarded to Laura Eggertson, a freelance journalist based in Ottawa, who will investigate Aboriginal youth suicide as a significant health crisis in Canada.
The first Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education will be awarded to Melanie Coulson, Senior Editor, Online, at The Ottawa Citizen. Ms. Coulson will spend the 2013 winter term at Carleton University's School of Journalism to teach an undergraduate reporting course and conduct research into the growing phenomenon of audience participation in journalism produced by media enterprises.

The Michener Awards Foundation honours, celebrates and promotes excellence in Canadian public service journalism. The Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism was launched in 1970, under the auspices of the late Right Honourable Roland Michener, Governor General from 1967 to 1974.
