May Housing Starts in New Brunswick
(firmenpresse) - MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK -- (Marketwire) -- 06/08/12 -- Residential construction activity in New Brunswick's urban centres was up in May according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data(1) indicate that a total of 340 starts were recorded during the month compared to 236 starts for the same period in 2011.
"The increase in total housing starts observed in provincial urban centres during the month of May stemmed mainly from significant year-over-year increases in single starts in Fredericton and multiple starts in Moncton," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Single starts in May totalled 132 units in provincial urban centres, up from last year's total for the month of 98 starts. At 208 units, multiple starts were up 51 per cent from last year's May total of 138 units.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in May were up seven per cent to 17,058 units compared to 15,962, a year ago. Single-detached starts decreased three per cent to 6,145 units, while multiple starts increased 13 per cent to 10,913 units in May. In the Atlantic region, 866 new units were started compared to 930 units during May 2011.
