Saint Joseph Hospital's Bypass Surgery Program Earns Top Rating
One of Eight Sites in Illinois to Earn Three Stars
(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 06/07/12 -- Saint Joseph Hospital recently received a 3-star (highest) rating for overall coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), also known as bypass surgery, from The Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS). The rating was based on data compiled and publicly reported from 2009-2011. to view data on the STS website.
The hospital is only one of eight sites in Illinois to be listed as three stars on the STS public-reporting site. A 3-star rating designates the highest category of quality and means that bypass-surgery results are statistically better than the national mean. Only about 12 to 15 percent of participating U.S. hospitals receive the 3-star rating.
CABG is a procedure that involves using blood vessels from the patient's leg, arm or chest wall to bypass blocked and narrowed arteries and restore adequate blood flow to the heart muscle. In 2011, about 145,000 CABG operations were reported by participating sites nationwide on the STS database.
"Our hospital has an outstanding cardiac team -- including anesthesiologists, operating room and ICU nurses, perfusionists (operate the heart-lung machine) and other allied health staff -- who have worked together for several decades to deliver coordinated heart care to patients," said , M.D., section chief, cardiac surgery, Saint Joseph Hospital. "Our three-star rating means patients can count on the highest level of cardiac care -- right in their own neighborhood -- without going to a major medical center. Patients and families will receive personalized, attentive care here."
, M.D., is the lead heart surgeon at Saint Joseph Hospital. Drs. Breyer and Bradshaw have worked together since 1992.
The STS database includes a total of 1,060 participating sites nationwide. Of these, 425 sites have signed up for public reporting on the STS website and 396 report on the , which is only available to subscribers.
STS developed the comprehensive rating system based upon the risk-adjusted data in four categories:
avoidance of mortality
avoidance of morbidity (percentage of patients who leave hospital with no serious complications such as stroke or kidney failure)
use of the internal mammary artery from the chest wall during surgery, shown to lead to better results
use of four prescribed medications following surgery, shown to improve results
"Saint Joseph Hospital has participated in the STS database since 1991 and was among the first wave of hospitals to agree to public reporting of the results which started in 2009," Dr. Breyer said. "While the vast majority of U.S. hospitals participate in the database, not all hospitals agree to publicly report their data."
According to the , the adult cardiac surgery database includes more than 4.5 million surgical records from an estimated 94 percent of all adult U.S. cardiac surgery centers.
is a nationally ranked, award-winning teaching hospital.
