Combined GT3 Cup Series' racers to run in support of Canadian Formula One race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

(firmenpresse) - MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/07/12 -- After an opening weekend of great racing at the Victoria Day SpeedFest held at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin moves due East to Montreal. The most unique aspect of the second of a five weekend race series is that it will be a combined event with competitors from the U.S.-based IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama. The GT3 support race, which has become a fixture as part of the Canadian GP weekend, will be run under U.S. rules.

"The significance of being present on such a big stage as the Canadian Grand-Prix is undeniable," said Joe Lawrence President and CEO of Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd. "This weekend promises to be even more special as Canadian drivers will be racing with their American counterparts, thereby giving everyone greater opportunity to gauge their individual performance."

Indeed, with many new faces and cars on the grid, some thought that last year's competitors might be overwhelmed by the injection of new talent. This proved to be anything but the case as last year's front runners once again ran for the lead during both races.

Newcomer Jean-Frederic Laberge won both ends of the Saturday/Sunday doubleheader with an impressive performance in the 2012 SpeedMerchants-entered GT3 Cup Porsche 911. In both races, last year's Platinum Class race winner, Marco Cirone and series champion Perry Bortolotti, were nipping at Laberge's heels for the better part of both races.

There was also hard-fought wins in the Gold and Silver Classes, with Bruce Gregory taking the Gold Class win in the first race and last year's champion, Shaun McKaigue coping the win in the second race. The Silver Class honors were taken for both races by Bob Seitz, last year's champion.

While Kyle Marcelli in the Pfaff Automotive 911 GT3 Cup was first on the track for both races he was not eligible for a class win or to score any points as he is classified as a "professional driver," having run several races in the American Le Mans Series in the Prototype C class.

Scheduled to roll off at 10:40 on Sunday morning June 10th, the Montreal GT3 Cup race will be run as a "race-within-a-race." Winners will receive trophies for first through third in the Platinum and Gold Classes, for both the U.S. Series and the Canadian Series. Because of the size of the field - 34 cars in total - there will be no Silver Class at this race.

"This race is unique. For one thing, it is a part of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend and has been for several years," said Laurance Yap, Director of Marketing of Porsche Canada. "It also marks the only time this year our Canadian teams will have to run under U.S. rules. And many thanks to our global technology partner, Michelin, who is demonstrating their long-term commitment to the Canadian series and is stepping aside, allowing the participating Canadian teams to run the U.S.-specified Yokohama tires."

Designed to develop new drivers and prepare them for competition in the American Le Mans Series, Porsche Cars Canada Ltd, in partnership with Porsche Motorsport North America and the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), entered into a two-year agreement for the 20th GT3 Cup Challenge Series in the world.

Additional information, including a downloadable schedule and competitor regulations, are available at . The next race for the Canadian competitors takes place at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, as part of that track's 2012 Summer Festival of racing.

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin is one of three official Development Series sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). It is also the fastest-growing single-make series in North America. The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin produces intense, exciting competition for semi- professional drivers alongside some of the most promising career-minded GT drivers in one of the world's most successful and iconic race cars, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, and on classic Canadian road circuits such as Mont-Tremblant and Mosport.
