Gray Monk Estate Winery: British Columbia's Oldest Family Owned and Operated Winery Celebrates Three Monumental Milestones in 2012
(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/06/12 -- This year, the founders of Gray Monk Estates Winery celebrate 30 years of winemaking, 40 years of grape growing and 50 years of marriage. From their cherished vineyard near the 50th parallel - a trail blazing family winery has led the way, shaping the "BC Wine World" enjoyed today.
Gray Monk is the Okanagan Valleys' only original winery that is still operated by its founders. A true family business, George and Trudy Heiss, along with their three sons, Robert (operations manager), George Jr. (winemaker) and Stephen (marketing manager), manage 100 acres of vines and produce an extensive portfolio of red, white, sparkling and dessert wines. Since it was established in 1982, the winery has garnered a steady stream of awards, both on the National and International level, including 9 medals at the 2011 Canadian Wine awards.
Beyond production of their own wines, the Heiss family has been instrumental in shaping the Okanagan wine industry. With active involvement in a variety of projects, George and Trudy have a number of accomplishments to celebrate, including the introduction of high quality vines, such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Auxerrois & Kerner to the valley to launching the Vintner's Quality Alliance (VQA) program.
Always on the forefront of innovation and producing premium quality wines; Gray Monk Estate winery released their first-ever Odyssey Meritage in 2011 and more recently the Odyssey White Meritage blend; composed of the traditional varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. They remain committed to the development of the Canadian Wine industry and producing award winning wines for many years to come.
Perched above Okanagan lake with stunning panoramic views of mountains, vineyards and the lake, Gray Monk Estate Winery offers guests a true taste, or sip, of the Okanagan lifestyle. With a bustling wine boutique, a full service banquet facility and a world-class restaurant, the winery is equipped to host guests for all occasions. In 2011, Grapevine Restaurant's executive chef Willi Franz was voted Canadian Chef of the year by the Canadian Culinary Federation of Chefs and Cooks; Willi showcases his talents with a creative menu of outstanding dishes to complement the wines.
In refection of their journey, Trudy sums it up, "It is really rewarding to have touched so many people over the years. It is very satisfying to have been one of the first, to still be hot in the running and to remain a family-owned and operated winery through it all."
In honour of this milestone year, the Heiss family invite you to drop by the winery to toast the past and celebrate the future!
