Minister MacKay and Thailand's Minister of Defence Hold Bilateral Meeting
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/05/12 -- Today, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, met with Thailand's Minister of Defence, Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol Suwanatat, during a bilateral visit in Bangkok, Thailand.
Minister MacKay and Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol met following the International Institute for Strategic Studies regional security dialogue in Singapore, to discuss options for expanding defence cooperation between Canada and Thailand, and Canada's increasing role as an important security partner within the Asia-Pacific region.
"Canada has a long and rich history of engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and is extremely proud to be celebrating the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-Canada Dialogue Partnership this year," said Minister MacKay. "Given the importance of the Asia-Pacific region, it is essential that we continue to engage with our Asia-Pacific allies. I am honoured to have been invited to Thailand by Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol for the opportunity to examine areas for increased defence cooperation and training between our two nations, and Canada looks forward to future Canada-Thailand initiatives."
Canada and Thailand have an established defence relationship which dates back to 1985. Since then, over 300 Thai officers have received training in Canada in the areas of peacekeeping, staff development, and English language training.
