Terry Yon: Pharmacies Strive to Lower Costs for Consumers
The Recent Approval of the First Generic Version of Plavix, a Blood Thinner, Has Sparked a Bit of Attention Surrounding the Efforts of Pharmacies and Pharmaceutical Companies to Make Medications More Affordable; Terry Yon, Owner of TYA Pharmaceuticals, Believes That Affordable Medication Is Something That Pharmaceutical Companies Have a Responsibility to Provide to the General Public
(firmenpresse) - TALLAHASSEE, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 06/05/12 -- Medical Daily has that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic version of Plavix, a popular blood thinner. Called Clopidogrel, the generic medication is expected to save consumers millions of dollars. Terry Yon, the owner of TYA Pharmaceuticals, applauds the efforts of pharmacies and other pharmaceutical companies to improve the affordability of medications. In fact, he has lobbied for legislation that makes prescription medication more financially accessible for Florida residents.
Keith Webber, the Deputy Director of the Office of Pharmaceutical Science, a part of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, believes that people who have chronic health conditions need affordable and effectual treatment options.
"Having affordable treatment options are important for people who have serious health conditions," stated Webber.
Webber is not the only member of the pharmaceutical industry who understands the need for affordable medications. and other leaders in the field understand that generic options are wonderful alternatives for consumers looking for a more cost-effective solution to their pharmaceutical needs. In fact, Terry Yon has fought for the availability of such alternatives on multiple occasions.
"In 1999, 2000, and 2001, I was the only pharmacist lobbyist serving with a battery of attorney lobbyists through three legislative sessions," commented Terry Yon. "I personally assisted in obtaining the final agreement with the Florida Board of Pharmacy members. This amendment to Florida law removed Coumadin, a blood thinner made by Dupont, to allow for the availability of Warfarin, a generic substitute manufactured by Barr Labs. This resulted in consumers saving millions of dollars. Additionally, I supported the FDA's approval of Clopidogrel, the generic alternative for the blood thinner Plavix, which is manufactured by Mylan Labs. This will also result in millions of dollars saved by the public."
The aforementioned article notes that when the FDA approves a generic drug it is officially indicating that the generic version of the medication is of equal strength as the brand name option. Additionally, the quality of FDA-approved generic medications is on par with their brand name counterparts. For this reason, consumers should have no qualms about purchasing the less expensive medications, as they are as effective as the more costly prescriptions yet achieve the same level of success.
