Minister MacKay and Singaporean Minister of Defence Hold Bilateral Meeting
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/04/12 -- Today, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, met with Singaporean Minister of Defence, Dr. Ng Eng Hen, during a bilateral visit in Singapore.
Minister MacKay and Dr. Ng met following the International Institute for Strategic Studies regional security dialogue, to discuss Canada's deepening bilateral relationship with Singapore, and Canada's objective of increasing its commitment as a security partner within the Asia-Pacific region.
"Our government is committed to expanding our defence relationship with Singapore," said Minister MacKay. "Canada considers Singapore a strong partner in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Singapore's recent leadership roles and participation in counter-piracy operations and international peacekeeping has been significant and has helped to provide an opportunity for a closer bilateral relationship."
Canada is committed to working with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) counterparts to address the common threats and challenges that affect the region. Canada recognizes the fundamental role our bilateral relationships will have in the broader engagement with ASEAN, during the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-Canada Dialogue Partnership.
In addition to sharing historic roots as members of the Commonwealth, Canada and Singapore have a well established defence relationship. This is demonstrated by the Singapore Armed Forces strong participation in Exercise Maple Flag, increased bilateral training opportunities, and representation by the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Singapore Air Show.
