Canada's Labour Minister Delivers Opening Remarks at the 5th International Stigma Conference 2012
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/04/12 -- The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, today delivered opening remarks at the Mental Health Commission of Canada's 5th International Stigma Conference - Together Against Stigma: Changing how we see mental illness. Her remarks focused on challenges faced by employers and employees in relation to mental health issues and on ways to better support individuals who may suffer from such problems.
"The Government of Canada is committed to promoting fair, safe and healthy workplaces across Canada," said Minister Raitt. "We are continually exploring new ways to better support employees who may suffer from mental health issues."
Mental health problems affect individuals, their families and co-workers and the broader community. They also have a direct impact on workplaces through increased absenteeism, reduced productivity and increased costs.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, including the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards, and the Employment Equity Act. These laws cover federally regulated workers and employers.
