(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/03/12 -- WWF welcomes today's announcement of the 2013-2020 Action Plan on Climate Change (PACC 2020) and accompanying Government Strategy for adapting to Climate Change from the government of Quebec.

The PACC 2020 sets an ambitious target of 20 per cent emissions reduction by 2020, based on 1990 levels, and the province is already making progress: 2009 emissions are 2.5 per cent below 1990 levels. Overall in Canada, emissions are 35 per cent higher than in 1990. Today's announcement outlines important steps, and rightly targets transportation as one of the major contributors to climate change.

However, the plan announced today does not demonstrate how the government intends to reach its target. The new plan is estimated to reduce emissions by 6 million tons, which falls short of the 17.3 million tons that is required. WWF looks forward to a breakdown of how each measure announced today will contribute to that target.

Quebec has been a leader in Canada in fighting climate change and, while much remains to be done, WWF hopes the PACC 2020 will encourage other jurisdictions in Canada to follow suit.

QUOTE

"WWF congratulates Quebec for their continued leadership in addressing climate change. With an abundance of renewable energy already deployed, we're pleased to see their focus on transportation, which can help lead the way in Canada. This Action Plan and Strategy outline an important agenda, and we look forward to seeing the details and working with the people and government of Quebec to help them reach these ambitious goals."

- Josh Laughren, Director, Climate and Energy, WWF-Canada
