(firmenpresse) - GATINEAU, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 05/30/12 -- The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), highlighted the Government of Canada's support for the tourism industry during his address at the Eastern Canada Ski Areas 2012 Conference and Trade Show.

"Our government understands the importance of tourism to the country's economy, and we know that the ski industry plays a role in creating jobs and growth in Canada," said Minister of State Bernier. "We encourage ski businesses, and all small and medium-sized tourism businesses, to continue offering exciting vacation opportunities that appeal to Canadians and attract visitors from around the world to Canada."

Minister of State Bernier also spoke about Canada's Federal Tourism Strategy and its goal of positioning the tourism industry for success.

"Through greater cooperation among government departments, the Federal Tourism Strategy is positioning Canada's tourism sector to take advantage of growth opportunities, to increase tourism revenues and to create jobs in all regions of Canada," said Minister of State Bernier. "The economic contributions of Eastern Canada's ski areas demonstrate how entrepreneurs in the private sector are at the heart of tourism. Entrepreneurs create the products and services that bring in visitors and make Canada a major player in the global tourism marketplace."

The Minister of State further pointed out that skiing and other winter experiences are important elements of the Canadian Tourism Commission's winter marketing campaigns in key tourism markets abroad.

Tourism is an important economic driver and community builder in all regions of Canada. In 2011, tourism activity generated $78.8 billion in revenues, representing about 2 percent of Canada's gross domestic product. It is an important source of employment in many regions of Canada, directly employing over 600,000 Canadians. A large majority of those jobs are with small and medium-sized firms.
