Cervelo has made history again helping Team Garmin-Barracuda's Ryder Hesjedal become the first Canadian to win a Grand Tour with his victory in the Giro d'Italia.
Putting in a superior performance in the final time trial on a new Cervelo P5, the most advanced and most aerodynamic time trial bike, and stellar rides in the Dolomites and Alps, aboard the legendary Cervelo R5ca, (tested by Tour Magazine to be 104g lighter than anything else and 32% stiffer), Hesjedal finished the 21-day race 16 seconds ahead of second place.
"We are enormously proud of Ryder Hesjedal and all of Team Garmin-Barracuda," said Phil White, CEO and co-founder of Cervelo. "As a Canadian company obviously we are honored to play a role in the first ever Grand Tour victory by a Canadian. Cervelo is all about building better bikes and having an athlete like Ryder and a team like Team Garmin-Barracuda race them to the GC win in an epic Giro is enormously rewarding."
Hesjedal's journey to the victory began with a solid performance in the opening prologue, where he finished ahead of the other GC contenders aboard his Cervelo P5, which he rode again in the Team Time Trial, a stage Team Garmin -Barracuda won. When the race hit the high mountains of the Alps and Dolomites, Hesjedal turned to the Cervelo R5ca. On the final stage of the race a time trial in Milan, Hesjedal once again rode the Cervelo P5, finishing an amazing 47 seconds ahead of his closest GC rival to claim the winner's maglia rosa.
