(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 05/23/12 -- UN Women Canada National Committee encourages Canadians to participate in the World Partnership Walk in their respective city, to advance the cause of alleviating global poverty and to contribute to the international movement to meet the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) by 2015.

The aim of the World Partnership Walk is to raise funds for programs that are bringing health care, education, clean water and economic opportunities to some of the most inhospitable and underdeveloped parts of the world.

"The aim of the World Partnership Walk is to help communities across the developing world identify and find lasting solutions to poverty. Ensuring that girls and women participate in, and benefit equally from development is critical to this process," said Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee. "Show your support; your participation in the Walk, taking place in cities across Canada this spring, is another way for us to express that we care for the underprivileged and that we want to make a difference in the lives of the poor."

Since its debut almost 30 years ago, the World Partnership Walk has raised over $70 million for international development programs and initiatives, making it the largest and most successful event of its kind in Canada. Funds raised by the Walk go entirely to overseas development programs.

"The support of Canadians over the years has been vital to sustaining effective, community-driven programs in places the world seems to have forgotten, such as northern Afghanistan, Mozambique, and coastal Kenya," said Ashina Sheriff, Convenor of the Walk in Montreal. "Yet, in these places, despite a harsh existence, there is hope: more girls are going to school, communities are growing enough food to feed themselves, and babies and young mothers are thriving, all thanks to our contributions."

The 2012 World Partnership Walk will occur in ten cities namely, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, London, Montreal, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ottawa. Take steps with UN Women Canada and the World Partnership Walk in your city by creating or joining a team, registering as an individual or getting involved in other ways.
