Forehead Lift May Provide Relief for Those Who Suffer From Migraines

ID: 1117445

(firmenpresse) - EDISON, NJ -- (Marketwire) -- 05/23/12 -- The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal recently published an article that reports that brow and facelift surgeries like forehead lift have the potential to treat migraines.

The study's researchers randomly chose candidates to receive a forehead lift, during which migraine-related muscle or nerve tissue was removed. Of the patients who underwent surgery, 92 percent of them reported that their migraines were cured.

The number of Americans who suffer from migraines exceeds 29.5 million and women are affected by migraines three times more frequently than men, according to the National Headache Foundation.

Information on the use of Botulinum for the treatment of migraines is also included in the study. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Botox in 2010 for treatment of migraines.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that 28,200 people received a forehead lift in 2011. A forehead lift is a cosmetic procedure that minimizes the creases that form on the bridge of the nose or across the forehead, and/or reduces sagging eyebrows. The surgery works best for patients 40 to 60 years old who wish to have higher eyebrows.

There are two main types of forehead lifts: the endoscopic forehead lift and the coronal lift. For the endoscopic lift, plastic surgeons make three to five vertical incisions so that specific forehead muscles can be removed. Then, small lifting implants or sutures are used to lift the forehead.

The coronal lift uses an ear to ear incision made across the top of the head. Plastic surgeons tighten and lift the muscles and skin for a smoother appearance.

"Forehead lifts tend to be more affordable than facelifts, not to mention the fact that they produce great results," said Dr. Miller, a who specializes in facial lift and procedures. "A forehead lift may be the answer to patients' migraine or skin problems, so they should speak with a plastic surgeon if they are interested in undergoing such a procedure."
