International artists celebrate German and Russian music culture on the island of Usedom from September 15 to October 7.

(firmenpresse) - Under the motto »Germany in Russia’s Reflection,« the 19th Usedom Music Festival will discover special facets of the large empire’s music from September 15 to October 7. The Baltic Sea connects the two countries geographically and music makes it possible to experience their shared history. At a press conference today artistic director Thomas Hummel and dramaturge Jan Brachmann will present this connection in the form of this year’s festival program. The musical culture of both countries will be celebrated with more than 40 events, with participants including the directors Kurt Masur and Thomas Sanderling, the cellist David Geringas, the pianists Lilya Zilberstein and Alexander Melnikov, the singers Anja Silja and Stephan Genz as well as the Academie für Alte Musik Berlin or the Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra.

The symphony concerts represent the climax of the 19th Usedom Music Festival. Kurt Masur and the festival orchestra Baltic Youth Philharmonic, together with the participants of this year’s international directing class, will open the program (on September 15) at the historic location at the Museum Peenemünde. On German Unity Day (October 3) for the first time an Orchestra in Residence, the Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra, together with the Rundfunkchor Berlin, and the NDR Choir, will perform under the direction of Thomas Sanderling two »Odes to Joy«: In addition to Beethoven’s 9th, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s cantata »K Radosti« will be played in a German premiere. The final concert (October 7), among others with the violoncellist Alexander Buzlov and the director Thomas Sanderling, is focused on Russian composers and their reflection of German musical history. The NDR Symphony Orchestra under its chief director Thomas Hengelbrock, together with the pianist Lars Vogt, continues the Peenemünde concerts, which were brought to life ten years ago by the Norddeutschen Rundfunk together with the Usedom Music Festival and the Museum Peenemünde.

The 2012 season promises a diverse program that not only offers insights into Russia’s great musical tradition, but also simultaneously reflects the German musical history with the mirror of more than 30 Russian composers and performers. From the baroque music of the czar era, the spectrum stretches to contemporary Russian Tangos. For the festival’s youngest guests there is a children’s opera »Save Pluto!« by Katia Tchemberji. In a concert with the Artenius Trio, the Russian composer and pianist, who lives in Berlin, also presents her new piano cycle »Kamni« (stones) for the first time.

In addition to this year’s exhibition, »Summer Guests – Russians on Usedom,« visitors can also admire traditional Russia with the Ensemble Polynushka, join in on an island tour with the chamber choir »Kant« from Gumbinnen (Gusjew), or experience a funny-zappy with the Volga Virtuosos.

In addition, on August 26 the Usedom Music Festival, in cooperation with the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, will produce a special concert in the Kaiserbädersaal again this year for the fifth time. The clarinetist and director Paul Meyer will lead the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and appear as a soloist.
