Parliamentary Secretary Chris Alexander Marks the Construction of 8 Wing's New Fire Hall
(firmenpresse) - 8 WING/CFB TRENTON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/22/12 -- The Honourable Chris Alexander, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, marked the construction of 8 Wing's new fire hall during a sod-turning ceremony today in Trenton, Ontario.
"This Government is delivering on its commitment to modernize defence infrastructure and equipment to meet the challenges of the 21st century," said Mr. Alexander. "The construction of this impressive new fire hall is one among several initiatives that will give 8 Wing Trenton the means to support our new Royal Canadian Air Force fleets and it contributes to the economy of local communities."
The new fire hall will accommodate bigger, 12,000-litre fire trucks and other emergency response equipment and personnel to support 8 Wing's CC-177 Globemaster III fleet and other modern capabilities. The contract for construction of this new $12.1 million facility was awarded to M.J. Dixon Construction Ltd. of Mississauga, Ontario, following an open, fair, and transparent competition process. The project involves the construction of a new 3,176 square-metre building which will be able to accommodate 14 truck bays, a vehicle wash area, a control room, offices, training rooms, equipment maintenance areas, and firefighter sleeping and support rooms. The new facility is expected to generate 66 new jobs and will be completed in summer 2013.
As environmental care and energy conservation is important to 8 Wing, the new fire hall has been designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver, a design standard for energy-efficient and sustainable construction.
8 Wing's current fire hall was built in 1962 and has a gross area of 566 square metres, with a single-story building and eight vehicle bays. It will be reassigned for use by the Military Police once the new fire hall is built.
8 Wing received the first two 12,000-litre crash trucks in summer 2010 and 2011. The remaining two are expected to be delivered late summer 2012. The fire hall also has one 5,000 litre air-deployable crash truck, and is expecting to receive two structural fire trucks in summer 2014 and 2015.
