The public warning issued on May 18, 2012 has been expanded to include additional codes of previously recalled salads, new salad products and national distribution.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Sobeys Inc. are warning the public not to consume the salads and in-store prepared foods containing lettuce described below because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
This is a part of the larger expanded recall of retail and foodservice salads initiated by River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC, California, USA with distribution in Canada.
The following salad products bearing Best Before dates 12MA12 to12MA29 (May 12 to 29, 2012) inclusive, are affected by this alert:
In addition, in-store produced products containing lettuce such as salads, sandwiches or wraps purchased prior to May 20, 2012 from IGA and Sobeys stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Sobeys, Price Chopper, or Foodland stores in Ontario should be discarded and not consumed. These clerk-served foods contain lettuce which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
These products have been distributed nationally.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
The importer, Sobeys Inc., Mississauga, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
