Harper Government Highlights Taxpayer Savings Through Diminished Subsidies for Political Parties
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/17/12 -- The Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State (Democratic Reform), today highlighted the $8 million in taxpayer savings the Harper Government has achieved by phasing out the direct subsidy of political parties.
"Our Government is delivering on its democratic reform commitment by phasing out the $30 million per year tax-payer subsidy of political parties," said Minister Uppal. "Funding for political activities should come from ordinary Canadians who choose to contribute - not from corporations, not from unions, and not from government."
The Harper Government is committed to bringing greater transparency to government by phasing out the per-vote subsidy for political parties. In December 2011, our Government passed the Keeping Canada's Economy and Jobs Growing Act, which contained measures eliminating the direct taxpayer subsidy for political parties over four fiscal years. Today, we tabled the Supplementary Estimates A in the House of Commons, highlighting taxpayer savings through year one of the four year phase-out of the subsidy.
"This year taxpayers will save $8 million dollars which would have otherwise gone to subsidize the activities of political parties," stated Minister Uppal. "The measures highlighted today demonstrate that the Harper Government is continuing to bring transparency to government while finding taxpayer savings."
The subsidy will be completely eliminated by April 1st, 2015, saving taxpayers nearly $30 million dollars per year.
