U.S.English Chairman Commends Queen Anne's County on Passage of English Language Bill
(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 05/14/12 -- U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today commended the Queen Anne's County Commissioners on their 4-1 vote to enact a bill making English the official language of the county government.
"With the passage of Ordinance 12-06, representatives in Queen Anne's County have given non-English speakers the best possible advice to help them achieve success: become fluent in the English language," Chairman Mujica said. "In the State of Maryland, more than 340,000 residents speak English less than very well, meaning they likely have difficulty carrying on more than a basic conversation in English. Declaring English the official language of the county does not place a limit on the language a citizen may speak, but it sends the message that English is the key to a more prosperous life in America."
Thirty-one states have already recognized some form of Official English. Representatives in Frederick County, Maryland voted in February to pass a similar Official English bill.
"I commend the Queen Anne's County Commissioners on their passage of this important legislation, and I hope neighboring counties soon see the benefits of following in their footsteps."
