Minister Fantino Welcomes Canada's Final CC-130J Hercules Transport Aircraft Delivery Ahead of Schedule
(firmenpresse) - 8 WING, TRENTON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/11/12 -- The Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, joined by Lieutenant-General Andre Deschamps, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and members of 8 Wing Trenton, today welcomed the ahead-of-schedule arrival of Canada's 17th and final new CC-130J Hercules aircraft, which will be put to work very soon in the vital tactical airlift role across the country and around the world.
"Today's announcement of the ahead-of-schedule completion of Canada's CC-130J Hercules delivery is welcome news for the Canadian Forces," said Minister Fantino. "Our government is once again demonstrating our commitment to providing our brave men and women in uniform with the tools they need to conduct successful missions at home and abroad."
"The Royal Canadian Air Force of the 21st Century must be agile, versatile, and reliable," said LGen Deschamps. "These are also terms that aptly describe our new fleet of CC-30J Hercules. And in keeping with the motto of 436 Squadron, they definitely 'carry the load.' "
The Canadian Forces welcomed delivery of its first two CC-130J Hercules tactical aircraft six months ahead of schedule in June 2010. Today's delivery of the final CC-130J Hercules to 8 Wing Trenton by Lockheed Martin was completed on-budget and three months ahead of the contracted deadline of August 30, 2012.
As a workhorse of the RCAF, the CC-130Js are used in a wide variety of roles, including transporting equipment, troops and supplies to, from, and within a theatre of operations. This fleet has already accumulated an impressive operational record supporting Operation Athena in Afghanistan and Operation Mobile, Canada's contribution to the NATO-led mission to protect the people of Libya.
Across Canada, the fleet has been actively participating in a number of operations and joint exercises, including assisting in the evacuation of Canadians from forest fires in the summer of 2011. In addition, September 2011 marked the first time that the annual resupply mission to Canadian Forces Station Alert in the Arctic (Operation Boxtop) was carried out using solely the CC-130J.
Today's delivery follows the Government of Canada's announcement in June 2006 to acquire 17 new aircraft to revitalize the Canadian Forces' current tactical airlift capabilities.
When this contract was awarded, Lockheed Martin committed to investing 100 per cent of the contract's value in Canada through the Government of Canada's Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) Policy. This policy ensures that economic benefits flow to Canada as a result of major defence and security procurements.
