American Legacy Fine Arts Presents 'Alexey Steele: Torn Beauty,' an Exhibition of Intimate Figurative Drawings and Paintings, Which Explores the Age-Old Question of 'What Is Beauty?'
On View From June 2 to 30, the Display Showcases Smaller Scaled Works From the Artist Known for His Life-size Canvases and Grand Multi-Figure Murals
(firmenpresse) - PASADENA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/10/12 -- American Legacy Fine Arts will present a collection of intimate drawings and paintings of figures and portraits with the exhibition 'Alexey Steele: Torn Beauty.' The display will be on view at the private gallery in Pasadena from June 2 to 30. A reception with the artist will be held on the opening day of the exhibition from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The works in this exhibition, in which the Russian-born artist examines the elusive traits of beauty, spotlight nearly 20 small-scaled charcoal and sepia drawings created on paper, as well as a few of Steele's trademark figure paintings in oil.
"Alexey Steele's discerning eye and incomparable skills as a draftsman enable him to give ethereal qualities to his subjects in 'Torn Beauty,' as he employs techniques used by figurative artists during the Italian Renaissance period," says ALFA Director Elaine Adams. "Incorporating these classical methods into this new body of work, Steele exquisitely renders images that capture the contemporary perspective on how society defines beauty today," adds Adams.
Indicative of the work of the Old Masters that he studied for insights on their painstaking techniques, Steele created the drawings on handmade cotton paper created by artisans using methods inspired by Renaissance papermaking craftsmen.
The artist then transformed the renderings into more contemporary mixed-media works of art, by mounting each drawing onto a panel that he individually painted to emphasize the mood surrounding the subject. For one panel, Steele rendered an abstract seascape, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that enveloped the reclining female figure.
