ID: 1112657

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/09/12 -- Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement to mark the passing of Mr. Garth Webb:

"It is with deep regret that I acknowledge the passing of one of our nation's heroes, Mr. Garth Webb. Mr. Webb was both a strong advocate for Veterans and a determined leader whose dedication contributed greatly to the recognition of Canada's Veterans. His tremendous passion for honouring and remembering those who served in Canada's military created a lasting tribute that will continue for generations.

A Veteran of the Second World War and the D-Day landings, Mr. Webb worked tirelessly and with remarkable determination toward the creation of a memorial and an interpretive centre that would pay fitting homage to the Canadian effort in the Second World War and especially during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. Through his efforts and his leadership of the Juno Beach Association, Mr. Webb succeeded in raising more than $10 million to build the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France.

Ultimately, it was Mr. Webb's tenacity, persistence and hard work that resulted in the building of the Juno Beach Centre, a lasting testimony to the courage and steadfast determination of Canadians during the Second World War.

Mr. Webb's legacy will live on in the Juno Beach Centre and in the hearts of all those he inspired. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Webb's family and friends."
