U.S.English Chairman Responds to Poll Results Showing Support for Puerto Rico's Commonwealth Status

ID: 1112596

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 05/09/12 -- U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today released the following statement upon hearing that a majority of Puerto Ricans support the territory's current political status as a Commonwealth.

"Recent poll numbers coming out of Puerto Rico show overwhelming support for the island's status as an unincorporated territory of the United States," Chairman Mujica said. "Commonwealth status provides the best of both worlds for Puerto Ricans -- it allows them to experience the benefits of being part of the United States while maintaining their language and unique cultural heritage."

Poll results published this week in San Juan's El Nuevo Dia newspaper show 51 percent of Puerto Ricans want to maintain the island's current political status. Among alternative choices, 45 percent of those polled support Sovereign Free Association, 36 percent support Statehood and 5 percent support independence.

"The English language is the one unifying factor that allows Americans of all backgrounds to communicate. Yet in Puerto Rico, more than 95 percent of the population speaks Spanish, and 2.8 million residents do not consider themselves fluent in English. Legislative and judicial hearings are conducted in Spanish, and the educational system is taught primarily in Spanish," Mujica added. "The addition of a Spanish-speaking 51st state would erode Puerto Rico's unique culture and cause significant challenges in maintaining America's national unity. I am pleased that these poll results show that Puerto Ricans appreciate the advantages that are offered in remaining a Commonwealth."

Residents of Puerto Rico will participate in an official vote in November.
