KENNETT SQUARE, PA -- May 8, 2012 -- ®, the premier provider of head and body armor for soldiers and athletes, and Safariland®, announced today the US National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has awarded Level IIIA certification to Safariland for its ABA Xtreme HP Level IIIA police body armor made with UNEQUAL's DEFCON™ technology. This latest law enforcement vest is one of the world's strongest, lightest and most flexible protective vests on the market. The proven effectiveness of the DEFCON technology allowed Safariland to accomplish the targeted 1.09 lbs. per square foot (psf).
UNEQUAL DEFCON is a patented composite technology that is thin, lightweight, flexible, and comfortable. The proprietary formulation absorbs and dissipates more energy per square inch than traditional trauma products and reduces more blunt force trauma in one panel than several layers of these ballistic materials combined. This reduction of layers inherently increases the flexibility and comfort of the vest, while decreasing weight, thickness and rigidity. DEFCON is also Berry Compliant and made in ISO 9001 certified facilities.
NIJ Standard-0101.06 details the ballistics resistance requirements of police body armor. Level IIIA provides the highest level of concealable body armor protection from high-velocity .44 Magnum handgun ammunition. Safariland performed exhaustive ballistic tests on the armor panels to ensure that the final product offers the highest levels of safety.

The DEFCON technology was recently tested and proven effective in stopping 5.7mm steel rounds (2,000 ft/s) in 1 lb. psf prototype Level IIIA packages. Since steel rounds travel 30 percent faster and don't mushroom out upon impact like a lead bullet, they typically are not stopped by a traditional ballistic package. However, DEFCON enabled a regular IIIA body armor to stop 52 steel rounds with no additional layers, plates, or modification. DEFCON is Berry Compliant and made in ISO 9001 certified facilities.
