Annual Event Celebrates This Supper-Table Staple
(firmenpresse) - ELIZABETH CITY, NC -- (Marketwire) -- 05/08/12 -- It's time to put your tractor in gear and head to the "tater patch!" Organizers of the May 19 in Elizabeth City, N.C., have adopted a farming and agricultural theme for this year's event, presented by . And what could be more appropriate for a county (Pasquotank), where potato production is number one among all the state's counties?
"This year we really wanted to focus on what the North Carolina Potato Festival is all about -- our agricultural community and the abundance of potatoes our farmers grow here," said Event Coordinator Cindy Williams.
According to the N.C. Potato Association, headquartered in , North Carolina, potato growers produce approximately 16,000 acres of potatoes, mostly in the fertile soils surrounding the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds.
This year, festival-goers can view antique and new tractors, see potato plants growing at different stages of development, and visit the trailer and their "Got to be NC" display. With a nod to another agricultural product, the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show will perform, with demonstrations of log-rolling, ax-throwing and chainsaw cutting races.
Other festival highlights include:
The Little Miss Tater Tot Pageant
National Potato Peeling Contest
"Anything But Fries" Restaurant Challenge
Cornhole Tournament
Potato Sack Races
Albemarle Hopeline Lucky Duck Derby
"Shaggin on the Harbor" Dance Contest (new!)
A car and motorcycle show
Arts and crafts will be for sale along the Main Street thoroughfare, as well as amusement rides and games for children, bounce houses and live musical entertainment. A returning major sponsor, , will have their well-recognized stagecoach on site for guests to enjoy.
