(firmenpresse) - VALCARTIER, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 05/07/12 -- Cadets from across Canada continue to set their sights on success. More than 125 competitors, along with their coaches and competition staff, will participate in the 38th National Cadet Marksmanship Championship, being held from May 5 to 12, 2012, in Valcartier, Quebec.

"This Championship allows cadets to build important virtues such as self-discipline and confidence, and allows them to compete in a gender-neutral recreational sport," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "I wish the best of luck and steady aim to this year's competitors."

The National Cadet Marksmanship Championship is the final event in the year-long Marksmanship Training Program for cadets across the country. The level of skill required to qualify for this competition meant that only top marksmen were eligible to participate.

"Truly unique to this year's competition is that the Cadet competitors will experience the most recent updates made to the Cadet Marksmanship Championship Series; providing them the opportunity to evolve within the sport and appreciate the new challenges that are available to them," said Rear-Admiral Jennifer Bennett, Chief - Reserves and Cadets.

The mission of the Cadet Marksmanship Program is to develop skills through training and competition which follow a progressive path to achievement where well-organized and professionally delivered events bring cadets together. The Marksmanship Program is patterned on Olympic-style competitive shooting, and several Canadian Olympians got their start through the Cadet program, including Pat Vamplew and Mike Ashcroft.

With the addition of new competitive elements to this year's championship, coupled with the fun, challenge and friends that this competition has always offered, the Cadet Program strives to remain a relevant, credible and proactive youth development organization, offering the program of choice for Canada's youth - remaining on target and aiming for success!
