(firmenpresse) - ATLANTA, GA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/03/12 -- America's new global gateway is one step closer to opening as more than 1,100 guests gathered this evening to dedicate the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal.

Valerie Jackson, widow of the international terminal's namesake, joined Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, Aviation General Manager Louis Miller, Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson and others for remarks, a portrait unveiling and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the facility, set to begin operations May 16.

"This magnificent building represents years of determination, hard work and vision on the part of thousands of people," Reed said. "The opening of the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal also heralds a new era of international opportunity for Atlanta, strengthening the city's position as a global gateway for the United States and as a preferred destination for business and tourism."

"Our goal is to make sure travelers choose Atlanta. I am certain -- and I think you'll agree when you have a look around -- that the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal and its Concourse F will serve as a positive, welcoming first impression of our city for all those coming to do business here and will further the city's reputation as a cutting-edge leader," Miller said.

A portrait of former Atlanta Mayor Maynard H. Jackson Jr. was unveiled by Reed and Valerie Jackson. The portrait hangs in the ticketing hall of the international terminal.

Planning, design and construction of the international terminal created about 3,000 jobs. Nearly 1,000 jobs are expected to be created to operate and maintain the 1.2 million-square-foot facility.

The international terminal connects with the existing international concourse, creating a world-class, 40-gate air travel complex. It will eliminate the need for Atlanta-bound passengers to recheck their baggage.

Passengers will access the international terminal via I-75 at Exit 239. More than 3,500 parking spaces will be available. The ticketing hall will feature 64 self-service check-in kiosks and 80 ticketing counters.
