International Terminal Prepares for Passengers
Airport Holds Simulation Ahead of Opening Day
(firmenpresse) - ATLANTA, GA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/02/12 -- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials today completed a simulated opening of the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal.
"The simulation was designed to test the new terminal's operational readiness and to identify areas in which to concentrate our efforts in order to ensure a successful opening on May 16," Aviation Deputy General Manager Balram Bheodari said. "We appreciate the feedback we received and will continue striving to meet international travelers' needs and tastes for years to come."
The scenarios focused on tenants, the training of employees, standard operational procedures, first responders and building systems. The Airport enlisted more than 1,600 members of the community -- including adults over 65, people with disabilities and families with children -- to participate. The simulation involved all Airport stakeholders, such as airlines, concessionaires, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration, which performed simulated screenings.
Some of the exercises included ticketing/check-in run-throughs, baggage checks (each participant was asked to bring two pieces of luggage), security screenings, emergency response drills and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection process. Participants also were asked to locate various amenities, such as specific concessions or airline lounges.
At the conclusion, participants were asked to fill out surveys to gauge the experience and provide their feedback. "We are grateful to the many volunteers who participated in the simulation, and we appreciate them for taking time out of their busy schedules to help us better serve our customers," Aviation Deputy General Manager Balram Bheodari said.

Planning, design and construction of the international terminal project created about 3,000 jobs. Nearly 1,000 jobs are expected to be created to operate and maintain the 1.2 million-square-foot facility. Construction began in summer 2008. The facility connects with the existing international concourse, creating a world-class, 40-gate air travel complex. The international terminal will eliminate the need for Atlanta-bound passengers to recheck their baggage. Passengers will access the international terminal via I-75 at Exit 239. More than 3,500 parking spaces will be available. The ticketing hall will feature 64 self-service check-in kiosks and 80 ticketing counters. Click to see a video update of the Maynard H.
