Labour Minister Appoints Arbitrator in Dispute Between Air Canada and the IAMAW
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/02/12 -- The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, has today appointed Mr. Michel Picher as the arbitrator to bring resolution to the labour dispute between Air Canada and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW).
"I am confident that Mr. Picher will bring focus to this process and that his experience will be invaluable in settling the outstanding matters," said Minister Raitt. "I urge the parties to extend him their full cooperation."
Mr. Picher was suggested as a candidate by both Air Canada and the IAMAW.Mr. Picher will render a decision on the final offers presented by the parties.
Mr. Picher's career includes serving as the Vice-Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board and teaching law at the University of Ottawa. He has also dedicated nearly 30 years to his work as a full-time mediator and arbitrator.
"By passing An Act to provide for the continuation and resumption of air service operations, our government took decisive action to safeguard the national interest and protect the economy," said Minister Raitt.
