Poultry Research From Vi-COR Shows Synergy Between Anticoccidial Programs and Celmanax(R)
(firmenpresse) - MASON CITY, IA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/01/12 -- is a parasitic disease that causes considerable economic loss in the poultry industry. Consequently, almost all broiler operations around the world include some anticoccidial program in their management system. The two most common methods to control this disease are to include a in the feed or to vaccinate young birds.
Unfortunately, both methods of control come at a cost to the bird. Reports of resistance to coccidiostats are on the rise. Vaccination elicits an immune response in young birds, but in the process diverts energy away from growth. To find a solution that protects broilers against coccidiosis without compromising immune status or feed efficiency, a series of experiments were completed using a ingredient called Celmanax®.
Celmanax was tested for its ability to control coccidiosis independently, as well as in conjunction with conventional coccidiosis control methods. In a study done at Colorado Quality Research Institute, Celmanax supplementation decreased intestinal lesion score and feed conversion ratio while improving body weight gain in broilers challenged with Eimeria.
Further study was undertaken at Southern Poultry Research Institute in 2011 under the guidance of Dr. Greg Mathis. He tested the ability of Celmanax SCP (Soluble Concentrated Powder) to improve weight gain as well as decrease feed conversion ratio in broilers that were either vaccinated or receiving an in-feed coccidiostat.
Celmanax SCP supplementation increased the average bird weight in the vaccinated group by 62g and in the coccidiostat-fed group by 39 g (p < 0.05). The supplementation of Celmanax SCP significantly decreased feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05) at all stages of growth compared to control treatments. In addition, Celmanax SCP also improved uniformity in bird size and weight, resulting in lower variation at the time of processing.
