Third Wave of Government Cuts Another 600 Public Service Jobs-"Affected"
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/30/12 -- Approximately 600 federal government professionals represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) are being notified this week that their positions will be "affected" as a result of "lack of work" and "discontinuance of function". Close to 3000 PIPSC members have now received a Workforce Adjustment (WFA) notice since the tabling of the 2012 federal Budget.
Departments impacted today include Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (45 employees affected), Library & Archives Canada (69), Statistics Canada (455), Transport Canada (16) and Human Resources and Development Canada (6). Affected professionals include Engineers, Researchers, IT specialists, and Commerce Officers.
"The government claims that its approach to streamlining the public service is well-thought out, but we fail to see any real strategy behind the elimination of thousands of positions other than to meet a bottom line", said PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "It wants a robust and innovative economy but it eliminates professionals who bridge the gap between government and industry. It wants precisely targeted programs but it sends "affected letters" broadly causing upheaval in the workplace. It wants a strong national identity but it sweeps away the people who document our history. The number one driver here is the bottom line. Service to Canadians is a distant second." he concluded.
Bargaining agents who represent affected public service employees are not alone in expressing serious reservations about the government's objectives and the methods used to achieve them. Last week, Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) Kevin Page cautioned elected officials about the lack of details released by the government regarding cuts to the federal workforce and their impact on Canadians and services.
"The government has initiated these wholesale changes to the public service in an environment lacking of accountability and transparency. Doesn't it speak volumes when the PBO must directly request detailed information from all departments so as to inform Parliamentarians and Canadians about what's happening", concluded Corbett.
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector. It is a founding member of Professionals Serving Canadians (PSC), a coalition of six concerned public service unions who believe that the Harper government's plan to slash programs and services across the government will have serious repercussions on the well-being of Canadians, their families, and their communities.
