(firmenpresse) - OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/26/12 -- It's a bond that no one wants to share, yet tens of thousands of Canadians are linked by the tragic effects of impaired driving. This weekend, 200 people who have suffered loss or injury will come together in Toronto for MADD Canada's 19th annual National Conference for Victims of Impaired Driving.

"For those who have lost a loved one or suffered an injury in an impaired driving crash, the grief and the feelings of isolation can be overwhelming," said MADD Canada National President Denise Dubyk. "Our National Conference offers a network of caring professionals and peers who can help them begin to cope with their loss or their injury. Most importantly, victims learn that they are not alone. There are people who understand what they are experiencing, who can offer help, resources and sometimes simply a shoulder to lean on."

Delegates gain comfort, hope and coping tools through sessions on a wide range of topics, including: living with injuries; parenting after the loss of a child; understanding the criminal justice system; and impaired driving civil cases. This year's keynote presentations include discussions of how to survive adversity and loss, and how to triumph over tragedy. The conference also features a specialized stream of programming for young victims, aged 25 and under.

The conference centres around the Candlelight Vigil of Hope and Remembrance, to be held Saturday, April 28th from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. With photos and the lighting of a single candle for each victim, the ceremony offers delegates a safe and supportive environment where they can pay tribute to the loved ones they've lost as a result of impaired driving or acknowledge injuries caused by impaired driving.

MADD Canada's Conference for Victims of Impaired Driving runs from April 27 - April 29 at the BMO Financial Group Institute for Learning in Toronto, Ontario.

With an average of 4 Canadians killed and 174 injured in impaired driving crashes every day, the need to offer support and services to victims is crucial. Supporting victims is MADD Canada's top priority. With volunteer-driven groups in more than 100 communities across the country, MADD Canada offers: grief and bereavement support; support through the criminal justice system; assistance with victim impact statements; help with understanding victims' rights; a lending library; brochures, community referrals; and trained victim service volunteers.
