Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime Commends Government for Recent Announcement on Federal Victim Surcharge
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/24/12 -- Sue O'Sullivan, Canada's Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime, commends the Government of Canada for delivering on its commitment to double the federal victim surcharge, and ensuring it is automatically applied in all cases.
Under the proposed amendments to the Criminal Code, the surcharge would be 30 per cent of any fine imposed or, where no fine is imposed, $100 on a summary conviction offence and $200 for an indictable offence.
"This legislation will serve to better address the needs of victims of crime. We are pleased to see the Government taking further action towards this goal," said Ms. O'Sullivan
These proposed amendments respond to recommendations made by the Office in its most recent special report, Shifting the Conversation: a Look at Refocusing Canada's Justice System to Better Meet the Needs of Victims of Crime.
The Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime helps victims to address their needs, promotes their interests and makes recommendations to the federal government on issues that negatively impact victims.
