(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/21/12 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement on the occasion of the Royal Military College of Canada participating in the Sandhurst competition:

"I salute the nine-member team from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC) that is competing in the 2012 Sandhurst Military Skills Competition, to take place at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, N.Y. on April 20 and 21st.These young men and women put in months of rigorous training on top of an already demanding schedule as Officer and Naval Cadets at the Royal Military College of Canada. Their dedication, fitness and teamwork epitomize the degree of excellence for which RMCC stands, and its commitment to producing outstanding leaders for Canada and the Canadian Forces.

While at Sandhurst, the Canadian team will compete against international counterparts in compass and map land navigation, marksmanship, rappelling, boat movement, grenade throwing, river crossing, and other challenging tasks. I wish our Officer and Naval Cadets all the best and I know they will represent their country with pride."

The competition takes place in the USMA training area in New York. Each team has a nine-member squad (the "Running 9") and two alternates. One member of the Running 9 must be female. The RMCC team competing consists of Cadets from all three Canadian Forces Environments with at least one member from each academic year. A team from RMCC has won the competition four times since 2005 (the last time was in 2009) and RMCC is anticipating another strong showing this year.

There are 55 teams taking part from around the world including the United States, Canada, China, the United Kingdom, Australia, Chile, Afghanistan, and Spain. The United States teams include the U.S. Service Academies, the U.S. Army Cadet Command (ROTC) and the United States Military Academy Preparatory School team."
