OP-Pohjola Group Research Foundation's first merit award to Professor Bengt Holmström

OP-Pohjola Group Research Foundation has granted its first EUR 40,000 merit
award to Professor Bengt Holmström for his achievements in economics. At the
same time, OP-Pohjola Group Research Foundation and Kyösti Haataja Foundation
have distributed some EUR 1.1 million in research grants.
Professor Holmström is one of the world's leading researchers in corporate
theory, corporate governance problems, contracts and incentive systems. His
recent research has focused on liquidity problems and financial crises.
Bengt Holmström (b. 1949) is Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. He did his B.S. in mathematics at the University of
Helsinki, and his Ph.D. at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. He has also
held professorships at Northwestern and Yale University and acted as visiting
Professor at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, Helsinki School of
Economics and Helsinki University.
Professor Holmström keeps in close contact with Finnish economists, business and
universities. He is a Board member at Nokia, Finnish Business and Policy Forum
EVA and Aalto University.
To commemorate its 40(th) anniversary, OP-Pohjola Group Research Foundation has
begun to grand merit and encouragement awards. The Foundation may give a merit
or encouragement awards to persons who have made significant contributions to
economics research. A merit award is given either for life's work or an
exceptionally significant achievement or performance. An encouragement award is
given to a person who has displayed exceptional creativity and who can be
expected to achieve something exceptional also in the future.
