For many, volunteering is a two-way street; it can help to sharpen your skills and build contacts in your profession while also giving back to others.
With a strong culture of giving back, IABC/BC () has numerous programs in place that see senior communications practitioners to students and professionals just entering the field volunteering while also continuing to develop their professional skills.
The recently launched sees IABC/BC volunteers putting their expertise to work to support local non-profit organizations. In celebration of National Volunteer week, IABC/BC is pleased to announce that and have been selected as this year's partners in the Gift of Communication program. These organizations will receive pro bono communications support to support their work as Ronald McDonald House BC works towards building a new larger house and the Special Olympics of BC plans for this year's Law Enforcement Torch Run.
"Hundreds of our members have given back to the communication profession for the 40+ years we've been around," says IABC/BC President Gary Carr. "And now they've taken this tremendous spirit out into the community to support these great organizations and to hopefully raise awareness about the benefits that good communicators can bring."
While volunteering provides opportunities to give back, it also offers many career development benefits:
Paul Hendren, IABC/BC's Director of Volunteer Services, sees the benefits of volunteering firsthand, "IABC/BC has a strong volunteer culture, with over 100 volunteers planning and delivering the services our members value. A perk of my job is seeing volunteers take ownership of projects, and build the skills and connections that take them further in their careers. It's fantastic to hear from volunteers who are working in jobs they're passionate about, and credit volunteering with helping them get there."
