OBGYN Specialist Daniel P. McDonald, MD, Responds to New Pap Smear Recommendations
A Recent Recommendation That Women Have Pap Smears Conducted Once Every Three Years, Rather Than Every Year, Has Had a Divisive Effect on the Healthcare Community; OGBYN Specialist Daniel P. McDonald, MD, Argues That This Recommendation Limits the Availability of Invaluable Healthcare Resources to Women
(firmenpresse) - DENTON, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 04/12/12 -- A government-backed panel has recently announced updated recommendations for Pap smear testing. In lieu of traditional yearly tests, this panel suggests that Pap smears be performed once every three years. Additionally, it recommends that women under the age of 21 and over the age of 65 do not undergo testing. Furthermore, the panel concedes that women over the age of thirty can have a Pap smear as infrequently as every five years as long as they undergo simultaneous screening for human papillomavirus, or HPV. , reels at such a recommendation, citing the cost of President Obama's healthcare reform bill as the only catalyst behind this limitation of healthcare.
"This is another recommendation by a government panel attempting to limit women's health care," commented OBGYN specialist Daniel P. McDonald, MD. "Government panel 'recommendations' eventually become fiats preventing patients from getting the care they need. These ever increasing government panel 'recommendations' limiting patients' health care come as the true and outrageous cost of Obamacare is slowly uncovered. I completely reject these government recommendations and intrusions and will continue to put the health of my patients first -- NOT the cost of Obamacare."
Such reactions are not uncommon among healthcare practitioners. Daniel P. McDonald, MD, is an OBGYN specialist who runs a pro-life facility. He knows that his clinic is a minority among such healthcare offices, but he continues to strive to do all that he can to prevent loss of life among his patients and their unborn children. In fact, this is his top priority. Limiting access to invaluable healthcare resources -- including Pap smears that can detect early stages of some forms of cancer -- is something that he sees as catastrophic to women's health.
The government-backed panel, which has recommended guidelines in accordance with those offered by the American Cancer Society, the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology, is firm in its recommendations. According to a Reuters , "The recommendation to test every three or five years is based on evidence that cervical cancer is relatively slow-growing," commented Dr. Virginia Moyer of the United States Preventative Services Task Force, "so it's very unlikely a woman would develop advanced cancer in the few years after a negative screening."
The recommendations are also based upon the risks of such screening versus their potential benefits: "Screen more frequently, and the possibility of women getting complications from any related procedures -- such as an exam and biopsy, called a colposcopy, following an abnormal Pap -- outweighs any benefits to the extra tests."
