RongRong and inri's 'Caochangdi and Liulitun' is part of 'Yellow Signal: New Media in China', a city-wide exhibition series initiated by Centre A: Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art
(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/11/12 -- Republic Gallery presents 'Yellow Signal: New Media in China', featuring the works of acclaimed contemporary artists RongRong (China) and inri (Japan) and their exhibition of Caochangdi and Liulitun. RongRong and inri's works reflect the intimate world they have created together, while pushing the boundaries of traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques.
In 2007, RongRong and inri established the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in the Caochangdi art district of Beijing. They also started the annual Three Shadows Photography Award to discover and encourage China's most promising young photographers. RongRong and inri's recent work brings attention to the beauty and value of new beginnings in their shared life and surroundings, especially amidst a rapidly changing world.
RongRong was born in 1968 in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, in China. In 1992, he studied photography at the Central Industrial Art Institute in Beijing, and in 1993, he moved to Beijing's East Village where he formally began his career as a contemporary photographer. He co- founded the magazine NEWPHOTO in 1996, which published its last edition in 1998. inri was born in 1973 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. She graduated in 1994 from the Nippon Photography Institute in Tokyo, a city in which she also worked as a photographer for the newspaper Asahi Shinbun. The couple met in 1999 in Japan and began working collaboratively the following year.

Founded in Fall 2006, Republic Gallery exhibits emerging and mid-career Canadian and international artists. The gallery's roster includes artists working in installation, video, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and contemporary painting, with many artists exhibiting across Canada and internationally.
About Yellow Signal: New Media in China
Yellow Signal: New Media in China is the first comprehensive presentation of contemporary Chinese new media and video art in Canada. The project was initiated by Centre A: Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, and will run from March 2012 - September 2012 in collaboration with the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at UBC, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Surrey Art Gallery, Pacific Cinematheque, Republic Gallery, and the Charles H. Scott Gallery at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. The city-wide exhibition series showcases a selection of leading new media works by twelve internationally acclaimed Chinese artists.
