Unhealthy Choices: Over 1500 Public Service Professionals Receive Notices in Second Wave of Government Cuts

ID: 1101990

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/11/12 -- More than 1,500 federal government professionals and scientists represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) are being notified this week that their positions will be affected as a result of federal budget cuts. This brings to over 2,000 the total number of professionals represented by PIPSC who have received a Workforce Adjustment (WFA) notice since the tabling of the 2012 federal Budget.

Most of these professionals - including biologists, chemists, veterinarians, and medical doctors - work to protect the safety and well-being of Canadians in such fields as food and product testing and environmental monitoring. Departments and agencies impacted include the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (344 affected employees), Health Canada (328), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (153), Environment Canada (137) and the Public Health Agency (75).

A substantial number of information technology specialists, commerce officers, engineers and researchers are also being targeted by the government, principally at Industry Canada (219), Natural Resources Canada (156), Canadian Space Agency (23), Citizenship and Immigration Canada (40), and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (53).

"With this second round of cuts, it's clear where the government's priorities lie - more industry self-regulation, fewer checks and balances to protect our food and our environment, and less science in the public interest", said PIPSC President Gary Corbett.

In the case of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), plans to reduce costs include removing "regulatory burdens to decrease industry burden" and moving from "eradication activities" to "containment strategies". "Has the federal government not learned the lesson of the listeriosis crisis in 2008", asked Corbett. "Canadians are again being told to depend on business for their health and safety".

"Our top priority is to provide our full support to our members during these difficult days", emphasized Corbett. "The Professional Institute will also continue to draw attention to the impact that government cuts will have on the critical programs and services Canadians depend on".

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector. It is a founding member of Professionals Serving Canadians (PSC), a coalition of six concerned public service unions who believe that the Harper government's plan to slash programs and services across the government will have serious repercussions on the well-being of Canadians, their families, and their communities.
