The Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation Attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., Discuss Workers' Compensation Fraud
(firmenpresse) - PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/11/12 -- Recently, a Pennsylvania man and his wife were arrested on charges of bribery and conspiracy for their role in taking more than $80,000 in kickbacks from business owners in exchange for reducing their workers' compensation premiums. The man, James McDonnell, was a supervisor in the state's workers' compensation program and had allegedly told employers insured through the State Workman's Insurance Fund that he could reduce their premiums in exchange for kickbacks. The scheme allegedly took place for more than a decade, from 1999 to 2011.
Cases such as these demonstrate the potential for abuse that programs such as workers' compensation programs are exposed to. While McDonnell's actions may not have directly affected any employees receiving benefits through the program, there are many other examples of workers' compensation programs and benefits providers illegally denying or reducing the benefits to which an injured employee may be entitled. This type of workers' compensation fraud can be particularly harmful for employees in this position, because without a steady source of financial assistance, it can be extremely difficult to pay for medical expenses and other costs necessary for recovery.
Fortunately, injured workers who are wrongly denied the benefits they deserve have the right to file an appeal and challenge this decision. Individuals who have been placed in this uncomfortable position should speak to an attorney about their legal rights and options as soon as possible. At Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., our are prepared to represent workers who have been unfairly denied compensation for a work-related injury.
